AI vs Human is an experimental animation that pits AI tools versus a human.

For the past several months I’ve been researching AI tools such as Adobe Firefly, ChatGPT, Midjourney, and Google Bard. I am intrigued by the potential of inherently emotionless tools “charged” with emotion-laden human datasets to produce work that elicits real emotions. I was curious to see how/if/should these tools fit into my art and animation practice. Searching for new ways to streamline production this short became an experiment: How quickly could I make an abstract animation with AI tools versus by hand? And, would it be interesting? It took 1.5 hours to make the AI section, and 2 weeks to produce the hand-drawn section. Was it interesting? That’s for viewers to decide. This experiment yielded two insights: AI tools are very much in their infancy, and lack the “happy accidents’ (so far) that make human made art so full of texture, and there is a very real ‘caution’ in using AI that lies in the question, what is real, and what is not?
