Week 42-25 - Curiosities

Greetings from the Mesa
This past weekend an estimated 7 million people demonstrated against the increasingly puerile US administration. The administration answered by shit-posting AI slop. The joke show clown circus continues. I am generally disgusted, but inspired by the fact that people are starting to wake up. Fall has arrived here in Northern NM and the beautiful sunny days are only punctuated by smoke plumes from newly started prescribed burns. Our air quality never catches a break it seems. I've been working on a new project, a kind of journal/comic. I'm way out of my comfort zone with this, but having fun. The most exciting and infuriating thing that has happened recently is a pack rat getting into my truck engine and filling it with dog turds and vegetation. Took a trip to the service center to get it cleaned out and working again. Thankfully there were therapy cake donuts on the return. It is a never ending battle versus the rodents! Tomorrow is another day!
Curiosities of the Week
- We've been attempting to hunt the comet Lemmon in our dark skies the past week. This map shows light pollution across the globe. It is sad to think that so many places around the world cannot see the milky way on a regular basis.
- Wealthy Americans are spending. People with less are struggling. (NY Times) "The top 10 percent of U.S. households now account for nearly half of all spending, Moody’s Analytics recently estimated, the highest share since the late 1980s. Consumer sentiment has climbed among high earners but steadily fallen for other groups."
- 1001 Albums you must hear before you die.
- Doing the Beautiful Thing. (On Things) "These small acts of self-expression not only help to gently rattle the inertia but point us towards deep wells of meaning."
- Why dabbling is important for your mental health. (Psychology Today) "Activities we do inconsistently can still have huge value for our resilience and mental health. It's good for your mental health to dabble—to engage in activities without expecting consistency or improvement."
