Week 32-25 - Curiosities

Greetings from the Mesa
We are deep in monsoon season and zucchini. The hummingbirds have started their migration and our feeders are loaded, we've never seen so many birds at once. Lots of Rufous hummers which is good news! We've been under a heat dome and escaping inside the cave house in the afternoons, this has led to a lot of reading. I've finished 6 books since the beginning of August - granted 3 of them were short novellas. I don't know what took me so long, but I finally downloaded the Libby App so I can get ebooks from the library on my phone. This is helping get through my reading list a lot faster! I don't feel like I absorb ebooks as well as I do print books though. Does anyone else feel this way? Libby keeps me off of social media, and it's been a delightful dive into other worlds while our reality sinks deeper into a fascist nightmare...
Curiosities of the Week
- Walter Martin Radio - "A toe-tapping diversion from the horrors of our time"
- In the first episode of The Eternaut several of the main characters are playing Truco as the apocalypse begins. Truco is apparently a popular card game in Argentina where the story takes place. Grab a deck, and learn how to play.
- The National Writing Project and the National Park Service have teamed up for an event called Write Out that runs between October 12-26. The 2025 theme is Awaken the Senses. There will be events at National parks and monuments, but you can also take a moment to "park" yourself and celebrate where you live, work, and play by writing about it. This sounds like a fun way to get outside and sharpen your senses and writing skills.
- S'mores Crispy Rice Treat Ice Cream Sandwiches. Campfire meets ice cream truck. Yes Please!
- I have been using Feedly to read my RSS feeds, but recently came across The Old Reader which looks intriguing. Also, the app Openvibe recently added the ability to add RSS feeds. Lots of interesting options to Feedly that need exploring.
Consuming
Currently Reading: The Count of Monte Cristo, The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi, and Ladies of the Canyon
TV/Movies: Wednesday S2, Andor S1, The Room Next Door, and I finished The Eternaut S1 which was really excellent.
Music: The Year of the Radical Romantics - Fever Ray
Thinking about: After watching The Room Next Door last night - a movie about euthanasia and friendship, this article appeared in the NYT today. I followed Joseph for a short time on IG, initially due to his artist pick-me-ups, and then unfollowed when his personal story into seeking assisted euthanasia in the Netherlands started to feel a little too performative. The article dove more into his personal history, and did nothing to dissuade me from that feeling. Somewhat unfortunate because I think it's an important topic to think about...
Thanks for reading, see you next time!
