Week 22-26 – Curiosities

Storm clouds over Picuris Peak.

Greetings from the Mesa

We’ve had some sporadic internet issues that I think are finally resolved, which is to say back to posting time has arrived. We are eagerly awaiting 1 June which is the day all the garden starts head out to the greenhouse. It’s a jungle in the solarium right now. This week we are heading to town to vote. This is the first time as an Independent I can vote in the open primary. Spent some time yesterday reviewing the candidates, and making a voting plan. We’ve had some cloudy/stormy weather lately but not enough rain. The monsoon forecast is looking favorable. Keeping my fingers crossed. Still trying to get Tongy’s blood sugar under control. Yesterday we did a glucose curve test, which involved giving him a poke for a blood sample every 2 hours for ~8 hours. It was uncomfortable for him, but he was a champ. I ordered some freeze-dried chicken treats for him so he can have some high quality high protein snacks for difficult days. Otherwise he’s doing better – hunting crickets again at night. On the creative front i’m brainstorming some ideas for my next experimental animation – would like to submit at least one film to the festival next year. I’ve been able to work in the studio at least 4-5 days a week, and enjoy outside time in the relatively bug free warm spring days. I’m walking more every day, and i’m just shy of 1000 miles on the “bike”. Feeling pretty good all around. Lots of links this week – enjoy!

Curiosities

  1. Patagonia has chosen a very stupid hill to die on… Drop the POS suit Patagonia!

  2. I’ve added Tohono Chul to my bucket list… the yearly blooming of the Queen of the Night. Maybe 2027!

  3. I don’t personally feel this, but I get the sentiment. Why Doing Nothing Feels Illegal Now.

  4. Brian Bilston’s poem Life of a Naturalist

  5. We May Be Entering A Second Axial Age. The transition from small hunter-gatherer societies into complex civilizations gave rise to the first Axial Age. Today, the planetary polycrisis of climate chaos, mass migration, increasing warfare and transformative AI represents a rupture of comparable magnitude.

  6. NM – The Mills Mansion: Found and Lost. Tracking down the hard-luck story of Melvin Mills, a founding father of the frontier town of Springer, NM. Another bucket list place to see that’s over the hills east of us.

  7. The art of Mogu Takahashi is colorful, fun, and playful.

  8. Pattern for a Japan apron – POCKETS!

  9. The awesome dancing Canadian is releasing a magazine of joy.

  10. I found a second vote.gov — and it’s registered to the White House. The levels of corruption only keep growing…

Consuming

Currently Reading: Cloud Atlas (Mitchell), Raising Hare (Dalton), Mistborn (Sanderson), Songlines (Chatwin). Too many books at once, i’ll probably finish Hare first.

TV/Movies: Ready/not ready for the Hacks finale. The last few episodes have been great.

Music: KP’s been trolling Bandcamp looking for new music. She found us some angry peri/menopausal punk ladies from England called The NaNaz with their first EP Nanafesto, and a chamber black metal band called Anareta from New Orleans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWAc44Yb0nA. Shred ladies shred!
